Freemasonry is charitable organisation and one of its main aims is to raise money for good causes. As an organisation we raise millions of pounds for worthy causes, locally, nationally and internationally.
Kindness has always been a core principle of Freemasonry. Individuals give time and money to help others. It may be realising a dream for a member’s child, caring for older Freemasons, volunteering on a local community project, making donations to other UK charities or responding to an international disaster appeal.
We try to support local causes
They say that charity begins at home and in our case this means supporting good causes near to us. In the Masonic Hall in Herstmonceux the members of the Michelham Priory Lodge do their best to support local charities and good causes, which has recently included:
- St. Wilfrid’s Hospice
- Local Scout Group
- Demelza Children’s Hospice
- The Chalk Farm Disability Learning Centre
- Eastbourne Food Bank
- British Legion (Reef)
- Sussex Girl Guides
- Soldiers Charity
- Children with cancer
- The village health centre's new ECG machine
- Wealden Talking Pages
- You Raise Me Up
- Herons Ghyll RDA Carriage Driving
Our charity steward looks on as our Worshipful Master hands over
two cheques totalling £740 to Leesa Pattison the "You Raise Me Up"
charity centre manager. The charity supports families who have lost a child.
This donation was used to purchase a new cooker in their coffee shop.

Wider Charitable Grants
With grants totalling over £5 million each year, we help thousands of disadvantaged and vulnerable people to live happy, fulfilling lives and participate actively in society.
Over the last forty years, we have provided over £130 million to charities. The Masonic Charitable Foundation’s (MCF) work is funded solely through the generous donations of Freemasons under the United Grand Lodge of England, their families and friends.
Contrary to popular belief, one does not have to be a Freemason to benefit from Masonic charity, the Freemasons are the second largest provider of funds to charity, only the National Lottery donates more.
Charities the MCF have supported near us:
- Sussex Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SABAH)
- Age UK East Sussex
- Headway East Sussex
